Homemade Garam Masala Powder

garammasla2-900HnamedGaram masala is an aromatic mixture of ground spices. In English garam means hot/warm and masala means blend of spices which translates to warm blend of spices. It is a must in any Indian kitchen. There are various methods of making Homemade Garam Masala Powder with different combinations of spices. This is a simple authentic garam masala spice mix with minimal spices and still full of flavour. Garam masala when added in greater quantities, or cooked too long, can overpower the dish with its strong flavour. It is only added as the last step of cooking, almost like a fresh herb, for it’s valuable special touch!

Homemade Garam Masala Powder – Make your own Garam Masala

Steps to prepare Homemade garam Masala Powder:

Moving on to the process, get ready with all the required ingredients and measure exact quantities to ensure right proportions. See the recipe card below the post for measurements.

Step1 garam masalanamed

Dry roast all the ingredients in a pan over medium heat with constant stirring to ensure even roasting. Roast till fragrant. It may take around 5 to 7 minutes. You can also sun dry for about 4 to 5 hours if you live in a place where there is ample amount of sunlight. I prefer to roast because it gives out a good aroma.

Cool the mixture and blend in a mixer to a fine powder. You can also use a coffee grinder.

step 2 garam masalanamed

You can store it in an airtight jar for about 2 months, as all are dry ingredients.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup coriander seeds
  • ½ Tablespoon cloves
  • 2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 4 to 5 Cardamoms

Instructions

  • Dry roast all the above ingredients in a pan over medium heat with constant stirring to ensure even roasting. Roast till fragrant. It may take around 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Cool down and blend in a mixer or coffee grinder to a fine powder.
  • You can store the powder in an airtight jar for about 2 months since all are dry ingredients.

Notes

Though the powder has a longer shelf life, it is advisable not to store it for a very long period since the aroma is lost.
You can try and adjust spices to suit your taste or even add your favourite spices.
